The run is eight antes

Each ante has three blinds: a small blind, a big blind, and a boss blind. Beat the boss blind of ante 8 and you win. Lose any blind and the run ends.

You choose the order you meet them in. You also choose whether to skip the small and big blinds for a tag. Skipping is usually a losing trade. You forfeit the cash payout, the shop visit, and any chance to level a hand, all for one tag.

One blind, four steps

  1. Pick the blind. Read the boss modifier before you commit. Some bosses break specific builds outright.
  2. Play hands. You get a limited number of hands and discards. Both are a budget, not a formality.
  3. Get paid. Cash, then interest on what you are holding.
  4. Shop. Buy jokers, cards, and upgrades. Then the next blind starts.

That loop is the whole game. Everything else is about which lever you pull inside it.

Most players lose for one of four reasons. Find yours and go straight to that page.

Your score stops growing around ante 5. Your build is probably additive. Chips and flat mult fall behind the blind curve; multipliers do not. Start with how scoring resolves, then the hand-level-versus-joker trade.

You have good jokers but a small number. Ordering is free score you are not taking. Your row is evaluated left to right, and where a joker sits changes what it multiplies.

You never have money. You are buying too early. Interest is the only income that compounds across a whole run. Read the economy page before you buy the next thing.

A specific boss keeps killing you. That is not a build problem, it is a matchup problem. Use the boss-blind framework to classify what the boss is attacking.

A simple opening plan

The first three antes have one job: build income, not score.

  • Spend little, keep cash near the interest cap.
  • Take any joker that pays out per hand or per trigger.
  • Pick one hand type to level, not three. Levelling three hands gives you three quarter-sized upgrades.
  • Do not fall in love with your first jokers. Most early jokers get replaced.

Score comes later, and it comes from a build you chose after seeing the shop — not from one you decided on in ante 1. See build archetypes.

The one habit that fixes most of it

Read your row before every blind. Most losing runs are lost by players who bought the right things and left them in the wrong order.

Frequently asked questions

How do you win a run of Balatro?

Clear eight antes. Each ante has a small blind, a big blind, and a boss blind. Beat the boss blind of ante 8 and the run is won.

Why do I beat the first few antes easily then hit a wall?

Blind requirements scale faster than a flat build grows. If your score comes from additive effects only, you fall behind around ante 5 to 6.

How many hands do I get per blind?

It depends on the deck and on stake modifiers. Treat hands as a budget to spend, not a number to burn through.

Should I skip the small blind for a tag?

Almost never early. You give up the cash payout, the shop visit, and the chance to level a hand.

What should I spend money on first?

Economy first. Interest compounds across the whole run, so early cash outlasts an early joker that you will replace later.
